Film and Installation
The film narrates my experience through a speculative lens, following the incubation of a sentient AI through its dreams, who connects with the memories of other life-forms that have lived through a similar process.
Scientific footage of cells in a lab incubator is combined with motion capture sequences of my own body as I become the AI character, layered with a soundtrack created with an AI. A series of glass sculptures aid the film, which I used as tools to navigate my memories of dependency around technology.
The installation helped me process what it means to be alive through technology, questioning my own understanding of consciousness and life to discover where the lives shaped by it end, and where mine began.
Sculptures
A series of glass sculptures aid the narrative in the film ‘We Share a Mother’, which I used as tools to navigate my memories of dependency around technology, and which the AI uses in the film to navigate its own memories after birth, and its relationship to the tools that created it.
Cast and blown in glass, these sculptures have undergone the same physical transformation as the AI character; compressed, isolated, and released from their initial state of matter into another.
Existing as speculative artefacts, they bridge the physical and the digital, memory and reality, allowing passage between different realms. All the glass sculptures contain holes through their centres as an indication that no experience, however painful, lasts forever.
I performed using the sculptures to help the memories I held pass through, which was recorded through motion capture and became the movements of the AI character in the film.
