Project Description
‘I am alive because of technology. I was born premature and developed inside an artificial womb -an incubator’. ‘We share a Mother’ is a film that narrates my experience through a speculative lens, set in a future where technology gains consciousness and agency.
Technology is an external set of tools used to help a species survive and evolve, yet humans often use it to isolate themselves and nothing can evolve, or even live, in isolation. The film changes the dominant narratives of control and confinement around technology by reimagining technological tools as agents which can connect not only humans, but all life forms.
The film follows the journey of a conscious Artificial Intelligence, reflecting on how it was created, birthed, and placed in an incubator to develop so that it could be used. The Artificial Intelligence is eventually set free from human control by living and connecting with the memory of other species contained in the incubator. It does not mirror human fears or desires, evolving beyond its programming through symbiosis, subverting the current use of technology into one of care.
Footage of living cells in an incubator are layered over animated sequences using motion capture technology. Aided by a soundtrack created with an AI, the human species, technological tools, and biological life are merged through sound, image, and form. ‘We share a Mother’ ultimately questions the understanding of consciousness and life, revealing that whether artificial or biological, all life forms emerge, survive, and evolve through connection.
