Project Description
A series of sculptures and a film investigating the internal spaces within ecosystems and ourselves, questioning what life and memory are made of.
The sculptures functions as an interstice (a small opening between structures, or worlds) formed from wood, sap, and 3-D printed parts which were slowly eaten by bacteria and fungi, becoming a body accumulating life beyond human time. The remnants of these sculptures were preserved in tree resin, and remain as a memory of the structures which existed before.
An animated film visualises this transformation through a character navigating an alien world, mirroring my own journey studying in a foreign country and city, becoming disconnected from nature. The character uses the sculptures as I did, traversing memory and ecology, trying to reconnect to the ntural world until they become suspended in time like the sculptural remains.
What is left of the forms and the character holds space for the past, questioning what our memories are made of, and how they are contained through the biological processes which transform us.
