Project Description
This project is a sculptural response to movement, and emerging during the Covid pandemic. It is titled ‘Freedom of Movement’ after the human rights concept of the same name. The different costumes engage with this concept -and how it is navigated socially, biologically, locally- both adhereing to, and breaking down, the constructed borders between them.

The costumes were inspired by the annual carnival in Antigua, W.I. which celebrates the emancipation of the slaves. This celebration includes dancing rituals performed in costumes which liberate the wearer, symbolising the movement of a people from enslavement to freedom.

During the pandemic it was not able to take place, and I created two biodegradable costumes sourced from the main ecological enviornments of the island. When worn together, the wearers cannot touch eachother as the costumes have a physical diameter of 1.5 meters, following the rules of social distancing. They act as an ode to the celebration of different kinds of movement in a time of restriction.
